There is a basic version that I thinks you should be fine for your purposes (RWGPS).

Yes GordonG the free version is totally adequate. It’s not so easy to make routes on a phone, I tend to do it on my Mac browser |

I use Ride with GPS and have been able to create GPX files for free. You can also create routes in Garmin Connect - I’ve used that this week for the first time very successfully. That’s free and you just send the created route to your Garmin. |

Having asked the question to start this thread, in case at some point in the future someone else wants to ask the same question, I thought I'd let you know what I found. I've opted for an app (on my Android phone) called Outdooractive. It does have extras you can pay for but it does all the basics that I'm after for free, and does them pretty well. You can create your own routes (via laptop is probably a better option than using the phone) or import a gpx. What I actually do is create a route on Fetch, download the gpx to my laptop then upload the file to my Outdooractive page, via the laptop. It's really easy to do. When I'm riding I strap my phone to my bike and following the map is really clear. You can have the whole screen as the map, with your position as being the dot in the centre of the page. Or you can have the display with the top half of the screen page giving 'turn left in 240 feet' instructions, and distance til end of route data, etc. There's also a voice prompt but I've opted to turn that off when I'm riding. If you go wrong it tells you straight away, with a line on the screen to the closest point (although not necessarily the shortest distance) back to your route. It also gives lots of stats (time, distance, uphill, downhill, etc) if you're in to that kind of thing. I'd definitely recommend it, although thanks again to all the Fetchies who kindly made suggestions to my request. |
