Ok I have a 5K in 9 days time. Thing is due to weather/ circumstances & a speight of overtraining/injuries ( last year ) I've done no real speed training since just before Christmas. I have a good base mileage ( 60-70mpw ) & have mostly been 'running to feel' since the end of last year - i.e occasionally running a bit faster & chucking in the odd sprint when I feel good. Question is will I struggle to 'race' the 5K & have lost a load of speed by now? Or will I still stand a bit of a chance at a decentish time?
I have an enforced cutback week from Sunday 'til the race the following week as I will be on holiday & there will be a lot of travelling- I normally would not taper for a 5K but think given the consistant higher mileage I have been doing since Jan it won't hurt?

What does anyone else reckon?

Stamina will not be your problem - so you can go out hard. You will feel strong - so suggest focusng as much as possible on your cadence. the faster your steps the faster you will run :)

I think you will have a good run !!

Thanks - I have a pretty high cadance anyway so that sounds promising :-)

My base training is much different to yours (about 40 mpw). I did a 5k this year during base training: I set off well, and was on track for my target time and big PB, but faded badly over the last mile.

On the contrary, my brother's 5k PB came out of nowhere during base training.

My old 5K PB came off the back of ultra training.

Your only likely problem will be lack of 5k "experience" at your current fitness level - with 5k you tend to need 2-3 goes to get and hold the level of pain necessary to really smash it. Any chance you can nab a parkrun on Sat to give it a go before the race?

I can do a park run ... but the problem is my local park run is rally muddy/hilly and my best time on it was 21 mins something - my best road 5K was 19 something & the race I'm doing is a flat road run.
