Boardman 3 stages of the Tour de France, World time trial champion, Olympic gold medallist and hour world record holder. If that's not bad, give me double portions of that.

"Not bad" in the understated English sense, Cheg, in the same way that when I finished my first marathon I said I was "a bit tired". ![]() |

Don't get me wrong, I thought he was absolutely great, and he was a big fish in the UK road racing pond. I've even bought one of his bikes ![]() |

Totally get you, Reiver, and yes, naïvely a lot of us thought he was going to conquer the world at the time. Horses for courses, though, I think. He was absolutely world class at a fairly narrow range of cycling activity.

In the same way that Ruud van Nistelrooy had a very limited range of footballing skills, but banging them in from 6 yards is quite lucrative.

Not everyone needs to be a GT GC rider, I just didn't know the difference back then. Funny to hear Boardman said that @Reiver, I'm assuming it was tongue in cheek though. |

Dauphine has been renamed. Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes from next year, presumably allows a slightly wider geographical reach for the race to cover?

I might be getting confused but didn't it used to be called the Dauphine Libere? Or was that a different race? And there was a separate Criterium International as well. I can't help thinking that the "Dauphine" name has some status because of the history the race has, although I guess things change and this might be the same in time. Seems a bit unwieldy though? |

I guess the Dauphine name gives it a geographical restriction that it wants to outgrown. French authorities are very keen about promoting localities through event sponsorship I think too.

I'll be honest that I'd never thought about the Dauphine being a geographical thing. It's a TdF prep race and the French crown prince used to be referred to as the Dauphin. I assumed it was some sort of a "crowning the next champion" origin to the name.
