My original race number had punched holes: its actually quite hard to punch through most race numbers though (you can also, I see, buy a special mini punch). Now I'm back to safety pins, I find a flat surface and have a Zen couple of minutes pinning my number straight. Unless I make an arse of it, when it's not quite as Zen.
