Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

FR, Sorry to hear about your fall.

Sapporo, I think maybe discussion has slowed done because there is a reasonable consensus about many of the practical issues (high cadence; not reaching forward with the swing leg, getting off stance fairly quickly etc).

However there are still some interesting issues about foot-strike, pronation etc. One interesting recent study showed that over a period of a year, pronation is not associated with increased injury risk in novice runners wearing a neutral shoe.

http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2013/06/12/bjsports-2013-092202.
So it appears that for runners who prefer wearing shoes, it is not worth spending money on motion control.

Padding is still an interesting question. I think the evidence now supports the proposal that efficiency is greatest with some padding but not too much.

Will Mo triumph again this evening? What is it about the move to Oregon that has pushed him to a new level? Maybe simply training along side Galen Rupp has shown him how to train seriously. But the big factor is Salazar’s focus on reducing Mo’s ground contact time; largely by resistance work to increase his strength.

Ironically , over the past two years I have been working on the same goal. I am amused by the fact that as far as I can gather, I have achieved a greater 5 rep maximum for squats than Mo, but he has gone from strength to strength on the track while I have simply got older and cronkier . I fear that increasing strength is not enough once your tendons have lost their elasticity.

Another of Salazar’s protégés, Dathan Ritzenheim will also be in the 10 K tonight. When Dathan joined the Oregon Project, Alberto tried to change him from a heel striker to a fore foot striker – initially with very disappointing results, arising partly from the predictable achilles problems, But in the past 18 months Dathan has at last achieved something of his early potential. His 2:07:xx in the Chicago marathon last year was the fastest by a non-African. I doubt he will be any threat in Moscow this year. Both Mo and Galen are capable of leaving him standing in the final lap. I suspect Dathan is focussing mainly on Chicago again. He too attributes his recent successes to developing the strength necessary to support his changed style.

So contrary to the disappointing outcome of my own attempts to get stronger, Salazar has confirmed that strengthening is a crucial part of maintaining good form.

Yes, it should be interesting and thanks for the reminder...:)

I agree with you on the some padding but not too much. I've done the no padding version and it can be very hard on the legs and feet, but a little padding (and not too spongy) works nicely and doesn't interfere too much with the way the foot feels the ground beneath it.

Yes...I'll be glued to the TV as well.
So what's to be done about cronky tendons? I assumed weights would be beneficial to muscles and tendons?
And is this anything to do with flexibility?

I wonder if that Boult/ Mo 600m showdown will ever happen. Ha! The mind boggles on that one!

RE,
I think that weights do also provide benefit conky tendons but progress is slow.

For the younger runners plyometics almost certainly help tendon elasticity, but I am not sure whether or not plyometrics are sensible for old timers. Nonetheless, I do gentle plyometrics on the trampoline

Canute, Sorry I haven't been back. Thank you so much for the info. Running yes. Don't want to post any videos, because the video was kind of an OCD of mine and it pissed off the folks here. But alternating 30 second sprints and 400 m intervals. Running on dirt, so I don't have to worry about that technique shite for now, haha. Someday, maybe, if one of these coaches actually has the patience to deal with someone who has no running talent (ha! never). But having fun. How is the efficiient Running industry doing there, by the way?

Sapporo, It is good to hear that you are having fun and that you are continuing with the intervals. As mentioned previously I think that the fire has gone out debate about style because we mostly agree on the major principles (high cadence, avoiding reaching forward with the swing leg etc) though there are some interesting minor point that remain uncertain. However, I personally am fairly happy with my style now. For me, the bigger questions are about how much training my aging body can cope with, and the timing of that training over the course of a year.

I still believe in Lydiard style periodization, but since Lydiard’s day, there have been some important increases in knowledge about the way the body responds to training. I think one of the most important advances is the demonstration that HIIT increases aerobic capacity while also increases capacity to deal with the efflux of potassium from active muscle cells. I think the decrease in difference of potassium concentration between the inside and outside of muscle cells due to this efflux is a major contributor to fatigue. Hence, I think HIIT has a place in a training program, but the question is how much and when. My current plan to do a few weeks of HIIT after I recover from the half marathon at the end of September, with the goal of improving my 5K performance in November. Then I will go back to Lydiard style base-building again to prepare for a marathon in 2014.

Firstly been a while since been on here just like to say catching up Canute is a wise and learn-ed King makes some great points. I especially like the fact about recovery runs being just that relaxed easy and keep at slower pace. I find lots of people have NO difference between a General run a marathon pace and recovery. Some do generals runs quicker than 10k pace.

It's all about the technique I've explored it quite a bit over the years tried the POSE tech then the CHI now I'm in my own development of this correcting as I go as I like the distance running just felt POSE didn't help me with that.

Also what is HIIT ??
