Last year was also the first time I trained a lot in spikes. Partly because ause my flats died but also because the Dragonfly are so cushioned in comparison to old school track spikes.

Oh they are Nike. I don't buy them due to the way they treated pregnant athletes in the past.

Fair enough. They dominate the spike world below the world class level from what I see unfortunately. The On Cloudspike 10000m were becoming popular last year at meets I raced at and were used by even their elite 1500 runners but are now illegal (they built them on the 25mm rule for the benefit even though they knew the rule was changing to 20mm at the end of 2024). I don't believe they have a replacement for it that widely available yet.

I used to wear NB spikes for track and XC until I switched to superspikes. The MDX V3 is supposed to be decent but is expensive, possible not suited to longer distances (Sydney wears them in the hurdles) and came out too late for me to try anyway.

I missed that about the lack of provision for pregnancy/maternity @Curly45. Bastards, but looks like they've corrected it after the exposure. @SPR I'm pushing 55 and never worn track spikes, so was unware of the general rules. I did a handful of track races as a v45 and went with the flimsiest racing flats of the time. Everyone said there'd be a boost with spikes but it always seemed like a bit of an expense for something I wouldn't really use often, and I was never at the sharp end anyway. |

@Muddyfunster I used to road race and track train in flimsy racing flats, in fact I've only just switched to the Streakfly 2 for road racing as I didn't want anything bulky like the VFs and the other shoes didn't seem better over my racing flats. That's why the DFs were so comfortable for training despite being spikes as they were actually more cushioned than what I previously trained in. Always track raced in spikes though as it's the racing I mainly do. The training in flats meant it wasn't a big transition and generally it was just the spike plate feeling a little harsh on the feet sometimes (something you don't get with the DFs). |

@SPR I'm very much on the forefoot striking end of things and anticipated the Streakfly might work for me - what distance are you taking them up to ?

@Muddyfunster I don't road race often (basically the Spring and Autumn road relays) but I'm hoping they will work up to HM as I'd like to do one in October if my legs are still feeling ok after track season. They were absolutely fine for the Spring National road relays (3.16 miles) where I raced in them less than 24 hours after receiving them. Since then I've only used them on track intervals (which they are perfect for) as haven't done any road continuous progressive/ threshold work. At some point I'll do some 7 mile progressive runs in them and report how they feel. My easy run pre the relays confirmed they aren't really for easy stuff as I had to really concentrate to hold back. The main issue might be durability for the longer distances as there's not much protection for the heel touching down after a initial forefoot landing which is likely in longer distances. Forefoot has decent protection although there are bits of exposed ZoomX. Another issue could be how aggressive they are for some runners but you don't sound like you'll have an issue with that, and the carbon plate in them is fairly flexible (it's a thinner plate than the VFs). |

Afternoon! Great parkrun @Sorequads racing @Curly45 and training @Foppotee Lovely Wrest pk grass session Saturday am, 10 x 600. Usual slow start with a 1.58, then down to 1.50 by rep 4, then mainly 1.48's and a 1.42 to finish. Then to Bedford to watch Ollie in thew 800 - did 2.27, but can do quicker i'm sure. Dragged him round my MK relay leg yesterday - 9m, so that was fun! Welcome @Muddyfunster running really well for an 'old' V50. Good work! Can only back up @SPR about spikes. I would recommend the Dragonfly2 to you and @Curly45 as the first run in then , coming from normal spikes will be amazing. First race shoould be a real 'OMG' moment. They are great. |
