Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I've managed to blow two pressure cookers, but then we used to use them at work as a mini autoclave... Not really their intended purpose. Gave the ceiling a good wash though!

Soup dripping off the ceiling when I was a child! They don't have those jiggledy weights these days.

@Diogens - Chichester Council says food waste accounts for 32% and wants its residents to actively reduce their food waste chichester.gov.uk

I have managed to get folk to reduce their food waste by encouraging them to purchase for 2-3 days rather than a week. Using the Olio app or community fridges to get surplus food or to give surplus food

For those who are scared of the hob based pressure cooker, there is an electric pressure cooker version. See Aldi is selling one for 50 GBP

My mum was a pressure cooking demon. We never had an accident with one and took it camping with us too. I remember some really delicious meals.

I had to look up autoclave Cackleberry - I thought it was a musical instrument! (My friend plays the clave.)

Got lots of those glass spice jars that are now empty. Any ideas?

Offered them to my sister in law for my nieces’ paint brushes. But in case she doesn’t need them…

Some you can get refills. That sort of thing "sells" well on our village free/swap page for storing beads and things.

We have a local shop that sells herbs, spices and a limited amount of foodstuffs in bulk - you can bring in your own container/bag to put it into. Just weigh the container before you fill it. :) I just take my herb/spice jars in to get them refilled.

FT Article on how broken recycling is:

Sustainability:
----------------
A growing "want" (consumption) has an impact on our world's resources. Historically we have gone through periods of frugality & eco-consciousness and always returned to the same apathy & couldn't give a damn about the environment we live in.

A linear economy means products head for the landfill. As landfills fill quickly, incinerators are now being put into place in the UK. Recycling is a broken system due to economics and incineration is simply the destruction of our resources.

The best would be for a circular economy and ways to close the loop.

Zero wasters care about their impact. On our journey to a zero waste lifestyle what are we willing to compromise on?

Resources for reducing landfill waste:

Freecycle: freecycle.org

or sell it on Ebay, car boot
Wrap: wrap.org.uk

How Stuff Works: home.howstuffworks.com

Food waste: consider composting. For cooked food waste have a look at Bokashi (FYI Anaerobic composting: http://www.alternative-energy-tutorials.com/aerobic-composting/anaerobic-composting.html)
