Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I’ve been going through my underwear - some pairs of pants and socks identified with holes in

Can I reuse them as rags for cleaning? Me fixing them probably isn’t going to happen, I’ve never been able to thread a needle due to shaky fingers :-(

Depends on the fabric. Some will be great for rags, some materials will just smear whatever is on it across what ever you wipe it across. You could also think about turning them into a draught excluder to put across a door? I put fabric into a pair of old trousers and then used string to tie the ends

Thanks that’s a good idea. I’ve got 4 “spare” pillows which have gone soft and I think I might see if I can repurpose them as draft excluders.

You might consider making a hot box. Require:
- Large stable box that can fit an old duvet/pillows.

- Old blankets/duvets/pillows to act as insulation

So when am cooking soups or need to cook something for a long time like for stock or beans, place a pot (or even better a pressure cooker) into the middle of the insulated box typically on top of a pillow or duvet. This will keep your soup hot for a good 10 hours; will also keep cooking stuff (like a slow cooker).

I went to a talk that included that sort of arrangement, with straw. A nutritionist on the panel does it when he goes camping with the family.

Works well in a normal house too. It's a slightly different way of cooking :)

Everybody should have a pressure cooker! Time and energy saved is huge.

I will look into that arrangement run free. Not something I can set up at present but I can see it working with my Dutch Oven.

Still traumatised by pressure cookers - my Nanna was a fan and used to overcook everything - and I was scared they’d explode!

@Fields Pressure cookers are much better designed. Totally agree @Jacdaw

FT Article on how broken recycling is:

Sustainability:
----------------
A growing "want" (consumption) has an impact on our world's resources. Historically we have gone through periods of frugality & eco-consciousness and always returned to the same apathy & couldn't give a damn about the environment we live in.

A linear economy means products head for the landfill. As landfills fill quickly, incinerators are now being put into place in the UK. Recycling is a broken system due to economics and incineration is simply the destruction of our resources.

The best would be for a circular economy and ways to close the loop.

Zero wasters care about their impact. On our journey to a zero waste lifestyle what are we willing to compromise on?

Resources for reducing landfill waste:

Freecycle: freecycle.org

or sell it on Ebay, car boot
Wrap: wrap.org.uk

How Stuff Works: home.howstuffworks.com

Food waste: consider composting. For cooked food waste have a look at Bokashi (FYI Anaerobic composting: http://www.alternative-energy-tutorials.com/aerobic-composting/anaerobic-composting.html)
