Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

cheaters as in jumped a wall? because it's a fell race, straight lineing between checkpoints on open ground isnt cheating in my book.

I'd loved to have done it - been wanting to do it for a few years now. Unfortunately I am doing the JW Ultra that day :-(

It's not a fell race, Pabsey. It clearly states on the website that it is a 'fixed route' race and that all competitors are expected to follow the route. Sorry.

Erm, I think the discussion has moved on from what is defined as cheating etc but this is taken from the route description on the website.

"The Grindleford Gallop follows a fixed 22 mile route through the lanes and paths of Derbyshire. All competitors must follow this route. An OS map of the area with the route highlighted is available for download on the website."

the route info does say that, as do many other fell races. They only grounds for disqualification is not visiting the checkpoints in order according to any info i've seen.

Wall jumping would lead to disq in many fell races and thats bending the rules too far.

I ran it through ednesor in 2008 and around it this year. It saved ~ quarter mile but added a steeper climb. Further to the right would have been shorter and flatter which I saw some taking. /me makes mental note for 2010

I've never seen any fell race that says 'follows a fixed route'

Other than taped sections through private land, generally near the start or finish.

The route is very clearly displayed on the maps they provide, and the route description is very, very clear. A statement of 'all competitors must follow this route' is pretty non-negotiable.

Well I never actually complained about people cheating/straying from the route. I was a bit miffed about missing the CP3 that's all.

I just ran the route as it says in the instructions. Don't think anything is subject to interpretation though to be honest.

I wonder if it will be ok for me to cut a fe hundred metres off the next half marathon I do? :-) Surely as long as I get to the finish?

At the end of the day I don't care. I know I ran the exact route and I know how long it took me. I also know I'll do it quicker next year and not miss a check point :-)
