I usually write things, and then rewrite at the end to remove all of the brackets and hyphens that I will have naturally included every sentence or two.

The copy editor on my last book had views on such things. I remember her asking about Half-, Single- and Double-Precision Floating-Point Numbers which would be represented in 16-, 32- and 64-bits.

Same. I use brackets way too often and once I've churned something out, I go back and remove the brackets wherever possible.

I must admit to using brackets (on occasion and much too often). Just seems more logical to my mathematical brain.

A wise person once advised me that content within brackets could happily be passed over. ;)

Exactly the reason for me writing them (largely).

An earlier poster (previous page) once chided me, in a blog-comment, for using (far) too many brackets. Which is (perhaps) surprising, as another (resting) Fetchies once told me I used as many brackets (bracket- and sub-clause-happy, perhaps) as a German (and she would know).

I use brackets in work emails a lot, but often they are used as an closer explanation of a decision I've come to - so can be passed over if they don't want to see my workings out.

Given the responses to my emails, I don't believe many people even read past the first bullet point, so it's probably all wasted effort anyway!

JK - your first sentence sums up how I deal with text in brackets. :)
