Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Woohoo, well done Emmi!

Now, has anyone heard how Rich's mate got on with his BGR attempt this weekend? Conditions were truly foul :(

Hi Slowboy. Well what a weekend!! The good news is that Rob completed in a quite astonishing 21.42!! Before he set off, he would have been more than happy with 23.59! He set a cracking pace over the first 2 legs, aware of the fact that rain was due in later. I struggled to keep up at times on Leg 2 (i did have a heavy pack! :-) ) and in particular, he descended like a demon! He was 55mins up at Dunmail. Dawn on the Helvellyn ridge was magical, with a cloud inversion just to top it all off :-)

Rain started in earnest when he was on Bowfell and Broad Stand sounded nasty. But even in those awful conditions, he made time up on Leg 4 and I was very surprised (and only just ready) when he appeared on the hillside above Honister well over an hour early!

Conditions on that last leg were atrocious but we still kept a very good pace, knocking 10 mins off over the last 3 summits. Got a great line down to the left of the rock steps coming off Robinson and then a slippy slidy few hundred feet down from the col to the path. He pretty much ran all the way back to Keswick as well!!

Cracking weekend, I felt good as well and got some nice comments off some very experienced BG people about how well I was going and some encouragement to give it a go sooner rather than later!?!? Possibly helping on a couple more upcoming attempts.

Ha ha....yesterday morning we were all a bit slow getting up out of our beds....apart from Rob who was out in the pouring rain and driving winds at Dunmail Raise to be there to encourage someone who started his attempt at 7pm on Saturday night!! I tell you, the guy's superhuman!! :-)

Thanks Hann, although believe me I did very little in the grand scheme of things.

Slowboy - "head in the right place"...not arf!! I've never seen someone so focused. It gave me yet another insight into just what it takes!! Quite scary 'cause it makes you really wonder whether you have got it in you. You could just tell how much pain he was in at Honister and on that last leg and yet he didn't relent.

Also another reminder (if I needed it!) that the weather can have a major bearing on success. Rob really didn't let it affect him but there were other people out there who were seriously hampered by it. The high fells are a rough place to be when the rain and wind comes in like that. Add into the mix the fact that you're seriously fatigued and it's a very dangerous situation.

Yes, it can be pretty treacherous up there Rich and your man did well not to let it affect him! Rain and especially strong winds can really affect the way you are going.

I was made aware of this only yesterday, on my run, when I got litterally blown off my feet and off the ridge by the strong winds... it was pulling hard on my rucksack and I kept on being pushed sideways off the track then all of a sudden I was lifted up and dumped onto some rocks along the side of the path. I had no way off stopping myself from being blown off!

I have had that situation before, when climbing Toubkal in winter a few years back, where I had to lean on all fours into the slope of the mountain to not be blown off. Had to go on all fours during the Mynydd Troed race the other day as well... The distadvantage of being tall yet light :-(
