Good target Sigh, good luck with it. We moved just over a year ago and got rid of loads. Now feel the need to go through everything again. If we’ve not used/worn it since we moved we probably don’t need it!

Everyone will have seen worse, Sigh
I'm being a bit uncompromising about managing the ingress of other households into mine. VP has moved back but he was living in one small room and he's tidy. FiL is also tidy, but he's got a huge hoard of books. His house is totally lined with them and he's said, "Wait till you see the loft." Having been ruthless with my own domestic library and got it down to one bookcase plus a shelf, I've said, "No more than can be fitted into the car boot in a single trip." In my defence, we've already brought a vanload of his favourite furniture, photographic equipment and books.
Tink promises to go through her belongings at Christmas. They're in the conservatory at the moment. And eL Bee! assures me that he'll deal with the unused bits of bikes and bike boxes.

On 'other people's books'
My friend who died recently was a prolific reader (both fiction and non fiction) and his entire house was walled with book shelves (not quite literally, but nearly). I did wonder what his family would do with the books. It was a lovely touch that they gave out a couple of hundred (at least) of them at his funeral (they placed one book at each place in the crematorium). It was so touching - especially as he wrote his name, the date and the place he bought the book in every one he bought. By chance I got a very relevant one, which I will treasure.

Rosehip
what a lovely idea TeeBee
I'm still at the getting worse before it gets better stage - we need new flooring laying, but at the moment there's not much floor visible in places as I move boxes of stuff and books from one place to another.

I feel your pain Rosehip. My daughter likened it to one of those little puzzles where you move square tiles around to make a picture - except someone has filled the empty space.
I've threatened the kids with cancelling Christmas if they don't tidy/clear out some of the junk. There were some positive noises, but so far that's as far as it's gone. At the moment, there's no place for the Christmas tree.....

Sigh
In the end I decided not to take photos, or even keep a list of what I've done, instead JFDI (well, apart from what I record on here).
Day 1 -
Put the suitcases away in the cupboard over the stairs (still out from last summer) Put the suncream back in the bathroom cupboard Threw out a table protector which was for a table we threw out 18 months ago (found it in the cupboard when putting the suitcases away), plus a bag of general bits & bobs that had no reason to be kept.
Still lots to go at, but Day 1 is helping to form a strategy, along the lines of:
In each room, clear stuff in the following order - things on the floor, then things on shelves or window ledges, then finally things in cupboards or drawers
The garage will be left for daylight hours at the weekend (and when the local tip is open)!

2 bags of too-small clothes gone to the charity shop, 1 parcel of bras that don't fit (why did I keep them?) posted off to Smalls for All. Cup of tea now, then tackling the shoe pile....

That’s a great start Sigh, well done.
I found when there’s a mountain to do that tackling it one drawer or bag at a time is the way to go. Once you’ve done one you can be proud you’re made a start, and often you’ll be on a roll and continue!
Two years in my house now and it’s probably time for another declutter. I’m keeping fairly well on top of it, apart from paperwork in the kitchen and I’ve never fully finished sorting the office!
