Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

The Belly Is Gaun Tae Get Ye
Got our van in December and was planning Northumberland, Dales and Lake District for next week, however now changed to two weeks from 15 July (if numbers continue to go the right way) in Dumfries & Galloway at our favourite campsite. Had a few nights away over winter but looking forward to prolonged use and trying out new awning set up.

One of the things I’m considering is buying a new transporter and then getting it converted.

Is there anyone on here knows anything about the engines and drive trains. I’m thinking biggest engine gives more options? And I’m thinking 4WD?

I’m researching the ‘net but at the moment everything I’m finding seems to be an “infomercial” for VW. Hoping to get some independent experience / advice.

Thanks

Interesting Angus, nice plan. You definitely want to go for horsepower as a conversion can add a lot of weight to the finished vehicle. If I was in your shoes I'd also consider what options I was buying with it. Not sure if 4-motion is strictly necessary, but others are dead certs. Number 1 is a flip up tailgate rather than barn doors.

We brought a 102 T6 highline basic van. We had the van remapped and it is great. It is fully load camper now and have no issues at all - I use it as my daily vehicle. It depends what you actually want. Given the choice we would have had the 140 6 speed engine.

Spec terms go for a highline. We have barn doors on our van and have no issues with the doors.

We converted ours ourselves (had a T4 previously) and love it.

NE - what are the advantages of the flip up tailgate? We're very happy with barn doors, especially for hanging a bike rack on.

(But I would have gone for 6-speed not 5 if I had planned properly!)

Mine is a 1997 T4 2.4D - rusty and old school. I have a rock and roll bed, lesisure battery, connections for power, funky lights inside, cupboards and a hob. The best thing I did was get a deisel heater fitted. Camping in October in the NORTH OF Scotland went fine thanks to the heater. Just got a hammock type thing so Jnr can stay with us next weekend. Basically a van with windows.

I have barn doors but if I am honest I would rather have an up and over but that is the cyclist in me thinking about my warm up.

However I think an awning may be a good enough answer, I use a full blown attachable tent when doing 24 hour stuff.

I went old school as the use is going to be abusive which its first year has been and frankly I don't camp so wasn't sure how much use it would get.

The answer was 2 x 24 hour mtb races but also an entire CX season where it was invaluable. Will probably run this one to death but replace it with another old T4. I quite like no power pottering.

Gobi we have a driveway awning which is invaluable. Bikes were on a barn door bike rack which was fine when it was just my road bikes but then OH brought an electric bike so we could go out together when away, so we now have a tow bar fitted and bike rack.
