Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Yes ok SNR, yes maybe it’s less narrow now. I have the 4th iteration speedgoats, and for me there’s plenty of space, I used to run in Salomon speedcross, and they where more narrow. I actually have two pairs of speedcross still that I use sometimes.
But my go to shoe is the speedgoat.
Thanks!

Interesting thread. As one who suffers with joint pain and who has tried pretty much every "cushioned" trail shoe there is, please let recommend the New Balance Hierro. Supportive and very cushioned, it's their best ultra shoe since the Leadville 1210 and the vibram sole is excellent and hard wearing. Good for runners with wide feet as they make a 2e version. Am currently on about 600 miles on a pair of v5 and just bought some v6.

Thanks, Northern Exile I like New Balance too, but haven't tried their trail shoes yet. I will add Hierro to the wishlist. On their road shoes I do sometimes find the toebox is comfortably wider. I have never bought 2E though I am on the verge according to measurements. I think Peregrines and some Hokas are also available in 2E. One can search fetchlinked Sportsshoes for the keyword «wide» :)

I have Scarpa trail shoes: two pairs, as I liked the first ones so much, I bought another, slightly different pair. (They were over 50% off at Sportsshoes a year ago). Protons: XT (mud) and Alpine (firm, rocky trail). Both are a bit cushioned with chunky Vibram soles and feel very well made.

They have tbh been more used for walking and even general wear, rather than anything like distance running. But worth a look. Current models are I think two generations on, and unfortunately still almost full rrp.

Yes thank you Northern Exile, have you tried speedgoat and can compare them to the NB?

I must admit I haven't tried them, I have a really wide forefoot and the Speedgoat was just too narrow when I tried them on. I've ran a few miles in the Challenger ATR and think the Hierro is a more comfortable shoe for me, but as you know this is all very subjective :-)

Northern Exile, indeed it is:)
When I searched for info on the hierro I also found “Fresh Foam X More Trail” I wonder if that’s their most cushioned shoe?

I have about 700km in my speedgoats now, and thing they lost their softness a bit. So hard to tell though if you can’t compare to an other pair.

Yes, I saw that shoe too .... must admit I didn't fancy it, a clear shot at the Hoka market I think. It would have to go some to be more cushioned that the Hierro .... I was wearing my old v5s yesterday as it happens and they still feel good, in fact I would say more cushioned that my new v6s - perhaps they take a while to break in ! :-)

I don't think it's been mentioned - apologies if I missed it, but Speedgoat now available in a wide option, which makes it about a normal width in other shoes !

I went up half a size in Speedgoat ( compared to all other Hokas ), and they are great if they fit, you can bomb down rocky stuff and hardly feel a thing. I feel they're pretty stable as well, more so than the Challenger, but I've seen others say they go over their ankle easy in Speedgoat.
Speedgoat 6 been previewed for next spring - no major changes to midsole/outsole I don't think, more an upper change.

About This Thread

Maintained by smoke free
I did a massive trail run yesterday. Because we've had no rain I work my super cushioned road shoes. There's about 6 miles of tarmac in the 31 mile route.

Today. Tired, natch, but no foot pain.

Got me thinking, should I think about changing from my Inov8 Roclite trailies and go for some with cushioning?

Thoughts?
