I did a massive trail run yesterday. Because we've had no rain I work my super cushioned road shoes. There's about 6 miles of tarmac in the 31 mile route.

Today. Tired, natch, but no foot pain.

Got me thinking, should I think about changing from my Inov8 Roclite trailies and go for some with cushioning?

Thoughts?

Mudclaws are quite springy - but on road or gravel/shale will quickly wear out.

I use Hoka Challenger's when I want some cushioning - but after INOV-8s, a bit like running on platforms and a very different feel. Also not much grip in mud, so needs to be dryish before using.

I like Hoka Speedgoat. Ran for years with Salomon Speedcross, and had some discomfort sometimes.

But with Speedgoats, much more comfy.

Saucony Peregrines work best for me, as a heavyish chap I certainly value cushioning

Derby Tup
I did Yorkshireman off marathon and Round Rotherham 50 in these and they are excellent. Decent grip for a trail rather than fell shoe

Thanks everyone.

Need to find some time to try some I guess.

My road shoes are Saucony somethingorothers so I might look at the Perigrines

31 is a lot of miles!

When I was doing ultras, I got some bulkier trail shoes, more for the toe protection, rock protection on sole than general cushioning. I went with Hoka Rapa Nui.

I have to say, rubbish for actual grip on anything slippy on any kind of incline - mud, grass, wet rock etc. But when doing very long I was always able to slow down.

For real hill / trail running Inov-8 (X-talon for me, some toe and sole protection, but no cushioning). Good luck. :-) G

Have anyone tried peregrines and speedgoats and can give some insights?
As I understand, the speedgoats has the most cushioning?

Sorry not those Bowman. My current facilities have been Hoka Mafate Speed 2s and Altra Phoenix 4s. Altras have a very wide toe area which was good for me to prevent toe blisters on trail marathons. They both have reasonable grip on gravel, rock wet grass, but not great in mud.
