JK , what about Kraftwerk? Any from Trans Europe Express, The Man Machine or Computer World. Not Autobahn - their first and probably most groundbreaking?

Classic albums since 2000 for me... The Strokes - Is this it Arctic Monkeys - wpsiatiwim LCD Soundystem - Sound of Silver PJ Harvey - Let England Shake Original Pirate Material I'm in agreement with too. Not sure what defines classic myself either. There are a number of albums of this century that I like as much as these, if not more, which I haven't included as I realise that is because they are very much a personal thing rather than being seen as a classic more widely.
Oh and Nick Cave - Ghosteen...

I'm having a listen to Astral Weeks. I feasted on Van in the early to mid 90's but haven't listened much lately. Astral Weeks is utterly brilliant. The songs, the band but also Van's voice. Have a listen too, and if anyone says The way young lovers do is 'weak' ignore them for they do not know

'The way young lovers do' is as perfect as the rest of the album.

My definition of a classic album (as opposed to greatest albums) are:
* Contain multiple well-known songs that everyone knows * Defines a particular genre, era or scene (ruling out Supergrass' I Should Coco, for instance) * Defines the artist's career (ruling out Smiths, R.E.M. and Pixies, who did multiple 'classic' albums) * Have stood the test of time and never seemed too dated * Be excellent albums.
So, the albums I would say fit as classic albums are:
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds Simon and Garfunkle - Bridge over Troubled Waters Sex Pistols - Nevermind the B*ll*cks, Here's ... Nirvana - Nevermind Blur - Parklife Air- Moon Safari
I'd say the greatest album is In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel, but I can't remotely justify it meeting my first two criteria.

I think that if a band or artist is good enough they should be allowed to have more than one classic album. I'm not a massive fan of The Beatles but you couldn't exclude them from this list because they've had more than one great album, surely?
*goes off to try Neutral Milk Hotel*

So I listened to Astral Weeks today on CD in the car. It is remarkable and because I wasn't focussed on the singing I heard all kinds of instrumental parts I've never noticed before. Beside you is probably my favourite track
Is it a classic album in my opinion? Yes. Is it Morrison's best work? Possibly. Is it my favourite of his records? Probably not - that's Veedon Fleece
