Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

D2D, don't be perplexed. Look at the bigger picture. A 15, a 16 and an 18 in training isn't really doing much wrt long runs either. You also clearly run them too hard if you run them at your "natural pace". You say you find it hard to run slower, and yet you ran the marathon at 8:15/mile. And looking at your other distances you're not reaching your HM potential based on your 10k time, and you ran your marathon at 45s/mile slower than your HM PB pace.

Maybe if you ran your long runs slower and did a few more you'd find that even that new mara PB is a soft one.

also

looking at your log you tend to run similar distances at similar pace try and vary pace more ie very eay and also faster just to get your body familiar with these,

try and introduce more speed work and try and go long ie 15m to 20m @ very slow pace ( sometimes i run 2min per mile slower that my mara pace ) you just have to practise and it will get easier and you will become stronger and faster in the end

thats my opinion others may say different

good look

As davie says you were running the long runs way too hard. So in all other marathons starting knackered.

There is no such thing as my natural pace, it just comes down to discipline. Looking at your short speed with a bit of smart disciplined training you will run much faster

Mr Alf Tupper
i went to look at your training but stoped at this statement -

"I don't drink or eat meat - haven't done for 10 years and won't be going back now. All about the clean living!"

Who drinks meat?

I'd be interested on how positive you were before running the marathon on no lsrs? Were you relaxed and not bothered? Or confident in your ability?

Thanks for all the comments, some interesting views...

Hehe I never drank meat - I just have an odd way of wording things! It sounds good in my head, honest.

Fenland - I went into it thinking 'this is a training run - I don't care about the time I get' (even though I wanted sub 4 - what a contradiction) - but then when the gun went off and I settled into a decent pace, I thought I may as well make the most of this... I was going so well it seemed silly not to take advantage... went past 16, 17, 18 - fine - then thought if I get to 20 and I'm still fine I'm having a really good day! 20 fine... 21 fine... etc etc.

I think the laps helped - I like laps as I know what is coming and can pace myself properly. Also, feed station - I was able to leave two little mini cans of Coca Cola (don't do isotonic) and had 1/2 a Freddo bar on me so that helped too (unconventional fuel but works for me)

I was confident in my ability for sure - I knew I'd run 7 marathons previously and was up to the distance. I don't do DNF, once I commit to something, I'll see it through 'til the end.

D2D, very interesting as running wise I have the opinion that a significant proportion of runners run 'best' when not under pressure but they are confident. Due to not caring about time your body can relax and get into a decent rhythm. Trying to force the pace can be counter-productive, 'just' letting it happen may be advantageous.

Fenland - my thoughts exactly. I had no expectations of myself in this race whatsoever. I only decided to run it a week before. Didn't even know if I'd get in. Definitely wasn't forcing anything - then when I got to 18/19 miles I thought, I may as well carry this on strong 'til the end since it's going so well.

How to apply this logic to London though... ! At least I'm in GFA pen so hopefully a (somewhat) quicker getaway than mass start?
