oh and since Death And The Penguin, I've read 17 off the G1000 list that aren't on the T100
I won't bore everyone with all of them, but highlights were:
Cheese (Willem Elsschot)
White Noise
Bleak House
Titus Groan
Tree Of Man (get the Daz "ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE" rating)
History Of Mr Polly

Never read any of Patrick White's novels, so I'm going to take that as a recommendation, Daz. Thanks.

Haven't read the Gormenghast trilogy since I was a student; would be interesting to re-read. Often find that the 'cult' type things I enjoyed then are a bit less impressive a couple of decades later.

I read and then re-read the Gormenghast trilogy, it still causes me to scratch my head and ponder every now and again. Ruined for me by the third volume (which was partially ghost-written wasn't it?), I thought it really detracted from the abstract and ethereal feel of the previous two. I may have to read them again.

My mum bought me the BBC DVD of the series and I haven't been able to watch it.

I don't think I ever read the third volume, as I found the first two somewhat heavy going. On the other hand, I liked The Handmaid's Tale, so my tastes clearly don't overlap too much with Daz's.

I have White Noise in the tsundoku pile so I'll give that a go.

Good word, tsundoku. My pile contains Marie Kendo's "The life changing magic of Tidying" which may be ironic.

I remember my school library having a Patrick White (The Naked and the Dead?) which I picked up a couple of times but never managed to get into.
