It's used far, far more often in British English than American English. Fowler says "It is an idiom that should not be discountenanced, but used when it comes natural." He's generally accepted as the arbiter of what's right and wrong in English grammar and usage. I've heard the same construction used in Swedish, too, so maybe the Vikings were to blame for it.
