Sometimes you don't have time to ring the bell and brake / avoid bell ends who step directly in front of your bike without warning.

Yup. I've never run into anyone yet but it's been close a couple of times. My bell thumb and best brake fingers are developing RSI.

It's when they cross from the other side of the street even though they've seen you coming at a rate of knots, and STILL carry on jaywalking in front of you as if they have all the time in the world and you're only on a bike. Used to happen to me a lot going up St Martin's Lane/Charing Cross Road.

That's annoying, but doesn't grind my gears like the people who are walking along the pavement, I'm cycling on the road coming up from behind them, and then without so much as a glance over their shoulder they step off the curb and wander across the road diagonally, walking in the same direction, still with their backs to you, oblivious. The other day I had to slam on the brakes and slam a foot down to avoid ploughing into a man's back because I was about twelve inches from him when he stepped out.

People who won't admit there is a problem with our education system, the tests were aimed specifically at problem solving BTW.

Travel news on local radio that doesn't mention the fact that there are significant delays and cancellations on your train line.

Good one, the traffic people seem to be 'personalities' now rather than actually giving out useful information

People who believe that the recent PISA results tell us we need to educate our children the way they do in the Far East. It doesn't, and we shouldn't.

Agreed - we should be moving more towards the Scandinavian system. There IS a problem with the education system but the answer doesn't lie in hothousing. We need a balanced education system that recognises and rewards ALL skills.

Indeed, although we need to be aware the Swedish system is in disarray since their move to free schooling a few years back, let's hope Mr Gove is watching! I remember him holding the Swedish model up in 2008 as a beacon of excellence. thelocal.se |
