Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Definitely barm, and equally definitely tea is an evening meal, just as dinner is eaten during one’s dinner hour (not that folk get those much any longer)

I thought barm cakes were actually batches, as in bread buns baked in a batch?

In a very similar vein, they are closely related to Bottom Muffins (always worth a quick snigger), or to give them their Sunday name, Lancashire Oven Bottom Muffins, which (a) are huge, (b) are not sweet and shouldn't be confused with Fruit/Chocolate muffins (basically fairy cakes on steroids, or English Tea Muffins and (c) are freely available in Yorkshire.

Where I grew up there were bread rolls - small bread rolls, large bread rolls, soft bread rolls, and crusty bread rolls. And suitable combinations thereof. But they were always bread rolls.

(Is a Belgium similar to a Bismarck?)

Locally, a batch can signify a single bread roll ~ so you could order a batch, or batches, of batches ... we like confusing people, round these parts ;-) :-)

Does one still wear a dinner jacket if dinner is taken at noon?

At school we had lunch boxes and dinner ladies, just to cover all bases.

Isn’t tea what posh kids had when they got home from school, jam sandwiches, cake, and a glass of milk?
