My friend having his phone linked to his 15 year old daughter's so he has a record of all her texts. Surely kids need some privacy to send silly messages and "guess who I fancy?" stuff alongside the serious ones.

I disagree, it shows a lack of trust. Teens are entitled to privacy. And she will just use Snapchat instead anyway.

I'm a bit torn by that one. I read an article recently about grooming that made a good argument for monitoring that sort of thing, but it does seem invasive.

I still think that it's pretty unlikely that anything sinister will happen to your kids if you have honest conversations about protecting themselves from a young age, that article is pretty anecdotal TBH. Parents should probably be more worried about family members and friends etc, since that's statistically where the danger has always been and probably will continue to be. I think the more you intrude into teen's lives, the more they will push you away and push the boundaries. Which doesn't mean you shouldn't keep an eye on unusual behaviour, but ultimately they have to grow up to be responsible adults, and I feel parents nowadays just cannot fucking let go. It does nobody any favours. Also, girls in particular have their freedom curtailed from a young age compared with boys. So they are less likely to be allowed to walk to school or go out by themselves, it's a real issue of their rights being lesser than boys' because of the whole stranger danger idea. This makes me sad ![]() |

Make a non - negotiable rule that if there's any contact with someone they and you don't know in real life, you have to be told. Then trust them.

Jono.
I'm with Fleecey on this one and we had that rule with Molly Carp - mind you she has still bumped into some right weirdo's - molly J and Mrs J have a good relationship though - its just parenting at the end of the day.

I guess it depends on the kid tho. When I was 15 I was a slutty little know-it-all and my parents were too busy destroying their marriage to do much to build trust with their offspring. I would have got into all sorts of trouble if I'd had access to the internet.
