Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

What do you know today, that you did not yesterday?

57.5 Days of Xmas
[I hazard a guess that many know!]

The tales of East Coast seafaring prompted me to look at Goole (where my great grandad captained a coastal freighter) on Wikipedia. I now know it is the country's most inland seaport (and much more besides).

Why the Germans call New Year's Eve Silvesterabend. It's named after Pope St Silvester I, who died on December 31st, 335. Apparently it was unwise to eat fish near him, as unbelievers would choke on the bones, so fish is perhaps best avoided as a New Year's Evening meal.

Is it not just Silvester?

But do you know why they watch "Dinner for One"?

I've heard both, ChrisHB, Silvesterabend was what our German teacher at school told us so that's the one that's stuck for me. As for the film, I know they watch it, but I have no idea why (or why anyone would want to, personally).

that if you cut a Tunnock's chocolate teacake in half and scoop the gunge out, what remains is quite nice.

Not a cheery discovery. I knew the Donner Party had resorted to cannibalism.

I didn't realise that the Forlorn Hope party killed their two Miwok guides and ate them. They were near death, mainly because they slipped away nine days earlier having been warned by one of the party of a plan to kill them.

Some dayd later the party stumbled into a Miwok camp. The Miwoks shared their food.
