Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

What do you know today, that you did not yesterday?

I like a pullover, so I thought I'd have a look at the Humber Keel Gansey, do a little bit of cultural appropriation from my wife's ancestry.

£350!

Time to learn to knit, DeeGee ;) (I suspect if most folk tried to knit a gansey they'd realise that £350 is cheap for the time and work involved.)

[Oh, I know, having watched my wife knit a blanket, I can appreciate the effort that goes into it. 123 hours apparently goes into this gansey. I imagine it's a fantastic garment.]

(they're meant to be practically second skin, so even harder to knit than a standard pullover. I'm not sure I'd want to try my hand at one)

[I'm sure they must be warm but do they not get heavy when wet, and therefore not conducive to falling in the water?]

[Wool retains heat when wet so it's better than most materials that might be used for garments to be worn out at sea in all weathers. And I think it's traditional to knit them very tightly with wool that still has its lanolin.]

[Before reading Sharkie's blog today, I had no idea what a gansey was, now I know where to shop for one and what to consider when buying wool should I ever want to knit one]
