At the time, I owned a couple of crystal decanters. Wedding presents from two decades earlier. I wasn't allowed a wedding present list, my mother advised people on what to buy if they asked her. Hence also smoked glass pots and pans, an electric carving knife and a hostess trolley.

Mum wasn't a tea drinker and was too Presbyterian to encourage getting comfortable in bed. The other side of the family, almost as if by mutual consensus, gave us pairs of hand towels with naff patterns on them.
