Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

8 times 200m strides (zone 5) on day 2 and 5 may not be considered a proper workout but I would say it's definitely more taxing than a simple easy run.

Even day 7 has 6x200 m of strides (zone 5).

So no easy runs that week.

It's interesting there's zones there as I wouldn't expect strides to be measured by zones. I think when I click on the Coros plan I don't see the full detail.

It's a good point and one those doing the plan will have to monitor. In theory you could throw some strides in the warm up on your effort days and make the easy days properly easy.

Believe Mark J 🇳🇿 said he had conversations with the Coros coaches about the plan so may have more detail on the philosophy.

Re: strides from my own personal point of view, only.

If I do strides, I tend to only do 4/5 max for about 15-20 seconds. I wouldn't call that any particularly stress on the body. They don't particularly raise the heart rate and are more physiological rather than cardiovascular. But that might just be me.

And I'll mainly do them as part of warm up. Though if there aren't any sessions in a week, I MIGHT, but certainly not always, do them one or two days otherwise.

Strides are definitely not a cardiovascular, they are about muscle recruitment. Garmin looks to do the same though and suggest a HR (if that's the target type you've selected) for 15 sec sprints. You'd think they'd override at points where it's not really relevant.

I do hill sprints and strides are step down from that in terms of effort, however I can see how if you have tired legs from the previous session they might not be something you want to do. I actually do 6 x 10 sec hill sprints the day before races to prime the legs so I'm happy that they help rather than harm in the right circumstances. When training I'd do 10 reps and I also may do some longer ones for speed endurance.

Yes, I thought similar on 200m strides as mine are usually simple 20 second bursts. Let's see how it goes.

SPR wrote:Mark J 🇳🇿 if I'm reading things correctly, the strides should be 160m or 0.16km if they are 1/10 of a mile. Odd way for the plan to list them. Pointing it out as less distance should equal less stress.

I think you're right SPR

I do have a habit of rounding up when converting miles to kms. I like whole numbers and if rather do slightly more than slightly less 😁🏃😁

After the above discussion around strides, I was slightly apprehensive about today's run. Turns out I needn't have been.

The 200m strides @ around 3:45's felt comfortable and I came away from that feeling like I had more to give, as well. Nice run, that.

Sounds good. I don't think you'd have to worry about them on the first run and assuming you're used to speed, they will prime you for the session the following day.

Had a Google of Coros strides and they recommended 20-30 secs. If the plan assumes a certain standard of runner, I presume that's where 160m comes from.

That adds up. I was 200m at approximately 45 seconds and I definitely could've gone quicker.

About This Thread

Following some discussion with the Coros coaching team, Iʻve decided to to try and improve my 5k time and general threshold pace. The ultimate target is to improve on my distance running but it starts with being able to hold a solid threshold pace. So, Iʻm going to be starting an 8 week, threshold improvement plan from the 27th of May. I wondered if anyone fancied running along with me, virtually.
