Although death rates were high (and children vulnerable), people had no choice but to get on with it. Could we learn from this? Worth a read if you can get the link to work. thetimes.co.uk

So the ability to 'cope' was different - sophisticated medical facilities were not overwhelmed because they simply did not exist. The outlook was perhaps different too - the notion of falling ill and dying being far more an expected outcome whereas now people expect modern medicine to give them a much better chance of survival. So the modern day choice is different - we can chose to have more people survive. We could just get on with it in an old school way and there would be avoidable deaths due to people not being able to get the best health care available and more people being exposed to it. Seems quite an extreme position to take when there are alternatives.
