Fragile Do Not Bend
Because of all the mentions of warblers on here, I'm trying to learn their songs (I'm really bad at remembering which song goes with which bird). I realise I'm hearing chiffchaffs everywhere, even in the background on TV! But not in my garden yet.

Chiffchaff and willow warbler are common in rural parkland, copses, on the edge of wood or moorland etc. Blackcap are quite common too once you get tuned in. There's mention of breeding grasshopper warbler only a few miles from us. I've never knowingly seen or heard one

Skylark singing, with a Kestrel hovering almost in the same vertical line. Wonder if they were a double act, the lark charming the rats out for the Kestrel to snatch? Stick that in your pipe, Mr Pied of Hamlyn.

I've spoken to a few folk who've heard (more) cuckoo this year than last few. I've heard several (plus seen one) after maybe two or summers with none

Wottashot of a Spotted FlyC! I don't reckon on hearing a Cuckoo locally now, and haven't for more than a decade. Rather envious of D2 and Derby Tup. Fragile--it takes patience and the best way to learn I think is to hear a song...and locate the bird a few times... thus creating that more permanent link. It makes some of us lazy to actually "look"..I tend to hear rather than see when I'm out running anyway, at least when it comes to small birds.

Trying to remember where you saw heard birds is good. It's amazing that you can be 200 miles from home and a dipper is on a "dipper stream" or a blackcap in a "warbler thicket". You can then pre-empt what you are likely to see. I often have a "target bird list" when I go somewhere |
