Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

A feat never to be rivalled. Roger Bannister was the epitome of the Corinthian spirit.

My mum says she nearly went into labour (I was due any day) listening to the commentary of his Mile in May 1954.

He always came across as a thoroughly nice man. RIP.

My youngest son sat next to him at the theatre, 4 years ago, when he was 13, recognised him and said hello and what an honour it was to meet him.

You would think that 60+ years of that kind of thing would get wearing, but he was very nice & took the time to ask about my son's running and to give a few words of encouragement.

Sad to lose such a great man. Amazing that his entire athletics career is immortalised in one race in Oxford.

A great athlete, doctor and man. Sir Roger Bannister was an inspiration to generations of runners and was a true Boy's Own Hero. Along with Alf Tupper , The Tough of the Track , he fuelled my love of athletics and running. RIP a real legend of sport.

A true gentleman, as were Chataway and Brasher. Interviews with them were fascinating and when you think how little running they did back then, sub 4 is quite an achievement.

His race is in surprisingly good quality here, the numerous times I have seen it before it has seemed a bit Pathe News
