Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Maybe she thinks the electorate have enough nouse to realise that with sky rocketing gas and electric prices, taking moderate steps to reduce energy consumptions is a good thing?

The unpalatable truth is that the majority* of the British public prefer a centre-right / right agenda. If Centre is as far left as the public are prepared to go then that has to be preferable to the nut jobs we’ve got in charge at the moment.

* majority as recognised by FPTP that is

I usually lurk rather than post but here goes with a brave one. For what may be the first and last time in my life I my be about to agree with Ms Truss. I'm not sure a public information campaign is a good use of resources. We've had our fill of publicity campaigns but we're fatter, more diabetic and quite possibly lazier than ever as a nation. I don't think it would make a difference, so it would be a waste of money that could be spent on actually helping people who do need the state to support them just now.

We *may* need something to stop people believing the energy price cap is an absolute cap on their total bill (anecdotal evidence a fair few think this but not hard data as far as I know).

I don't want to give 15 million of our hard earned to the government's marketing and advertising cronies. I'd rather it be spent on public sector pay, or community facilities or something.

Don't worry I have no intention of agreeing with Liz Truss again.

Lol lf - but by that argument no business or organisation or charity or anyone would ever spend money on advertising or marketing. Ridiculous as it always seems to me, advertising does work! (I always think I'm a discerning shopper and don't listen to adverts for Daz or Fairy Liquid. But I just mentioned Daz and Fairy Liquid in a post on social media, so you see the effect advertising has!)

I do think genuine advice on how people can save a bit of energy and hence keep their bills as low as possible might be of value - there were tips like how to reduce the temp of the water that your boiler is set to that I didn't know about. And obviously cheap, easy things like draught excluders on letter boxes and doors and so on might all just help a bit?

The worst thing about it is what they are NOT doing. That kind of message might have been useful. But more useful still would be:

Massive insulation for every home - lofts, doors and windows, walls and under floor
Replacement of gas boilers with electric heat pumps and battery storage to minimize peak usage
Local generation - solar panels, small wind turbines, if not at each house then at community level
National generation - accelerated wind and solar, replacing gas and coal (let's not talk about nuclear), and pricing it at cost plus instead of at "market" cost which is artificially inflated because of pressure on oil and gas from Russia's war and OPEC's reduction of supply.

Anyhoo, banging that environment drum because it happens to coincide with people being able to afford to live, heat and eat. :-) G

Yes advertising must work but I'm not sure it's the answer now or indeed is the answer at all for the kind of committed behaviour change we need to reduce energy use. Proper practical advice (and actual real life help for those who don't know how to put it in place) I would be up for giving a bit of my hard earned to. Buying Daz rather than Persil is quite easy. Arsing about with my boiler, changing my car use when i dont have time to walk and the buses are shite and cycle lanes are nonsensical etc not so much.

The Change4Life and of course the old Don't Die of Ignorance campaigns don't inspire me with confidence that the government could chabge our behaviour through advertising.
