Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Bloody weather this afternoon, keeps interrupting my gardening.

First we had a dust storm caused by the dry soil from the ploughed but unplanted field next door being blown around, now it’s a hail storm. I’m expecting locusts next.

:-o where are you FDNB?

Here we had snow on the hills first thing and it was really cold, but the bright sunshine made for a weird thing: it was both really hot and really cold at the same time...

I started by doing the strimming and cutting the grass. Or so I thought, this morning. I lost the bolt of the strimmer head and after an hour on hands and knees, I could not find it. I was unable to source another bolt, so I came home with a brand new Stihl strimmer with bullhorns and brush blade :-o OK, not totally flippant, as the old strimmer had been decidedly temperamental, is very old, was a gift and has lasted much longer than expected. It is also rather underpowered and has no proper handle so a pain to use...

After I got to grips with why the wire kept breaking off, it wasn't rolled up very well in the auto-feed, it worked a treat. However, it is too large for the fruit cage, so ended up cutting the grass in there on hands and knees. I may put landscape fabric down, see if that works... it has always been a pain to cut.

My raspberries are autumn-fruiting, but this doesn't stop them coming up all over the lawn. They get mown down on the rare occasions when I mow the lawn.

I hope you were spared the locusts?

We have frost forecast here tonight. I wonder if I should turn the greenhouse heater back on and put the pots with tender-ish plants that I over winter in a non heated cold frame back into the cold frame. Mind, it has been open for a couple of weeks now, hardening things off. I am away the week after next and want everything outside and planted out by then, so I don't have to find someone to water every other day!

Thankfully no plagues of insects. 😅

We’ve put the paraffin heater on in the greenhouse but it’s probably a bit small for the size of greenhouse so I’ve brought my tomatoes indoors for the night to be on the safe side. My husband’s chillis will have to take their chances as they are in big pots.

A bit difficult to appreciate from a still picture but we had at least an hour of this, a lot of the time blowing right into our garden . I’m surprised there is any soil left in that field.

I've covered "everything" over tonight, fingers crossed that enough to protect from frost as I don't have a greenhouse heater.
