Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Seem to remember reading 2 seconds pace improvement per pound until last stone above ideal running weight, those last 14 = 1 second

Drops in to say hello, enjoying the discussion on here :)

Yes, weight loss makes a huge difference to performance - I think the 2s/lb/mile is about right for me - but flippin' 'eck, losing the lard is not easy!

Weight does impact form - a colleague started adding gentle running to his daily walks as he has been losing weight and generally getting healthier. Turns out, if your thighs are too big the consequent impact on the way you swing your legs upsets your knees and your footfall. He was told not to run until he'd lost another couple of stone so as to not embed a particularly bad form.

I seem to remember it being around 1 Lb lost (without going under your ideal weight) = around 1 minute to your marathon time

Same thing SSLHP. 1lb @ 2s per mile = 52s for a mara i.e. about a minute. :-) G

Weight isn't high on my personal list of potential performance gains. Just checked and I'm bang on Stillman's numbers for a MD runner (that's 800/1500m with 3000m on the edge) and that's slightly up on the weight I have hovered at the past few years

I basically let weight take care of itself via training and eating fairly well. Have never done calorie restriction or diets.
