There is a long walk called the Monks Trod coming up soon, near me. From Strata Florida in the west to Abbey Cwm Hir in the east. It's an annual event. Should love to do it one year, but too late for this year. However, I find the fact that it says you must have a compass and know how to use it slightly worrying.

I'm bumping this thread because I am starting to plan to do some long distance walking.

I wondered, what would you consider essential kit for a day walk? I know it varies depending on season, terrain, and the weather, but give me your best advice and learnings.

Thanks

Flapjack and a flask - everything else is just baggage.!

I went out for a full day's walk last week - it was only a last minute thought but I collected my sunhat on the way out of the door. Really glad I did as it was such a sunny day.

Sorry to hijack your question Dio, but I just wanted to share this link from an article last week - some lovely ideas for LD walks.

theguardian.com

Now, to answer your question more appropriately: obviously, depending on walk length, I do like a spare pair of socks - either for on the walk, or at least for the journey home.

Really does depend. A lot of my longer walks are in the Scottish hills. I bring first aid kit and survival bag on most walks. Full waterproofs and extra layers - it is Scotland after all. I’d rather have all the kit and not need it. Plenty water and food as well.

If I’m closer to civilisation then I might take less.

Yep, I've got those on my list.

Anyone have any thoughts on walking boots v walking shoes, or even trail shoes?

[I have an old pair of cheap Karrimor walking boots that I plan to upgrade.]

For ‘walking shoes’ I use Inov8 RocLites that ElBee! Flogged me a decade or more ago.

I take a "lighter is better" approach to walking footwear and wear trail shoes for all off-road walking.
