My girlfriend at the time ran, she had muscle tone in places where previous partners didn't have places so I though this must be worth a try. The work gym had new Life Fitness treadmills which had three US Forces running fitness tests so I thought I'd see how far off the pace I was, not much it transpired and it became a mini obsession for a few months to get the maximum score on them. Interestingly my weight didn't change but my waist went from 32" to 27" to the surprise of the lady doing an at work health check around that time. I got a charity place for the London Marathon because that's what people who know nothing about running do and then some time later completely by accident became a Local Running Personality. Needless to say, I had the last laugh.

My 7 year old son could run a mile downhill faster than I could. I had to beat him. (Interpret that as you will )

I had been a fifteen and a half stone porker, and joined my missus on a weight loss programme. During which time we rescued a beautiful brindle lurcher. I had previously run as a youth aged 17, and 23 years on figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to take my lurcher for a run. She ran like a supreme doggie athlete and I mostly tried not to keel over of a heart attack. My dog sort of smirked and laughed at me in a superior greyhound sort of way. That was in 2009.... 5 years later I found myself running sixteen and a half for 5k, 35:07 for 10k, 1:17 for half and 2:46 for the marathon. So the reason I became a runner was due to my dog. I joined my first running club following a dog sitter who looked after my dog mentioned he was joining a running club, and I thought why not......oh yes I forgot to mention that all of the above helped me to lose five and a half stone which may well have contributed to my quick times as a V45 runner.

Always found running to be a bit boring and didn't like it. Especially when I had a bike that I could use to move faster and see more. That was decades ago though. I started playing hockey again around 2008 and with the running during training I'd always be gasping with effort and the last one. I vowed that during the summer breaks from hockey that I'd get fit and finally in 2013 I did start running. It became a battle of trying to make it around the 'big block', which is 1 mile along each side. Worked my way up to 10km, then half marathon, marathon and now I've done 56km! And in the hockey team I was able to change position into one that required a lot of running! Consistency and persistence were key, with a firm goal in mind.
