Hmmm maybe, but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to give my best where the outcome is not that important to me. I wasn't going to win or place, I wasn't going to PB. I have lost the desire to race just because I'm in a 'race'.

I wonder if it is possible to sometimes get a bit jaded in one's training and whether it is worth doing different sessions, just to mix things up a bit? So perhaps the progressive 13 miles to MP worked well for you in the past, Loca, but changing to doing something different might just kick start you again. I'm not saying that doing the right sessions is not important, just that a change is sometimes helpful for a new challenge. |

I know it's something I've got to work on but it's hard enough coaching myself let alone playing sports psychologist!! lol

I can understand the not giving your best ... if the outcome of the race was not important to you, I guess you didn't really feel as if you were "in a race".

Not sure I'm qualified to post on here, but two points stood out to me. 1. Dropping mileage in favour of "speedwork" - in my opinion, you don't have to necessarily have to have a high drop in mileage to still run big mileage. Ok, my paltry 55mpw currently is far less than most people who will post on here, but I manage to fit in 2 sessions a week of hard hill reps or intervals (or sometimes even 3, if you count parkrun/orienteering as tempo or fartek runs). All you would need to do is replace 2 of your runs a week (e.g. tues and thurs eves) and replace them with a session. There's still plenty of time to get your easy base mileage in - and if you still want more, do short easy runs in the morning of these sessions to make up the "missing" mileage. 2. Racing. My personal opinion is that people don't race enough. Barring interval/speed/track/parkrun sessions, I rarely run faster than my HM pace for extended distances. Certainly never down to my 10k pace. Yes, the speedwork helps to keep that level up, but racing makes a big difference, because I will always run faster in a race than in training. I quite regularly have A, B & C goal races on the go. It might be that for one, I decide to pace it properly for a specific time, another one I might blast it out and see how long I can hold on. I also do a mix road, fell, train, XC races and I've found this makes a big difference (especially fell racing - it's made me much, much stronger). Having a goal beyond (after) your "A" goal also helps keep focus I find, even if it's a C race (i.e. run around enjoy it and forget about the time). Right, not qualified to speak further, so will now just lurk with interest. I will get to 80% WAVA, just give me a year or two.. |

I rarely run 50 miles a week, but I don't do Marathons, and almost never do tempo runs or hill work. What I have been doing until recently is racing almost every weekend, which nearly everyone tells me I shouldn't, and doing one, usually very hard, interval session a week. The rest of my running is just general runs, usually at about 7 mi/m pace or a bit faster if I feel good, of 5 to 10 miles, and maybe a longer run Sunday if I don't race. I am not saying that is the way to do it, but either because of or in spite of doing it that way I have managed to get over 90% WAVA a few times, but I did it that way because I enjoyed it, not because I thought it would make me faster. Maybe it worked because I started running late in life and anything I did was going to make me faster, at least up to a point. At the moment I am not quite sure if that point has arrived or not! |

WAVA target thread is a good idea, Loca. Have you looked at the Fetch Standards? here http://www.fetcheveryone.com/race-standards.php These are really quite funny but nice targets none the less. I'm currently Red-breasted Merganser but I have my eye on Frigate Bird or even Spiny-tailed Swift this year. Perhaps we could declare our Fetch standard target and enjoy progress towards them here. I'm sort of agreeing with Fozzy, run fast and race. parkruns are great for just going out and blasting round 5k. That pace then helps you in the longer races. I run 40-50mpw but race as often as I can get away with. |

Brotherjohn looks a good bet for Spine-tailed Swift this year!
