I'm thinking of buying the garmin 920xt for an ultra marathon. Does any one have one of these? Are they accurate and worth the money?

Hi Becky,

The 920 is a tri watch. Have a look at the Garmin Fenix range for an ultra watch. as for accuracy, most watches use GPS and so are about as accurate as each other. Some of the newer watches like the 920 and Fenix 2/3 support multiple GPS formats which may make a difference. By the way, how long is your ultra? You can check the specs to see how long they should last on battery. Also some of the watches support charging on the run (ie whilst still recording) which you might need. See dcrainmaker.com for a good watch comparison.

CW (full disclosure, I'm not an ultra runner!)

Hi cw, I looked at garmin fenix 2 but it had bad reviews for gps accuracy. The ultra I'm doing is a sunset to sun rise challenge 15 hours. I have a garmin 620 but the battery life just isn't long enough

At the moment the distance accuracy on the Fenix 3 is suspect. Mine measures between 2% & 7% shorter than my 910, depending on the number of bends and tree cover. However Garmin have acknowledged this issue and are working on a solution (or so they say).

The 920 has (slightly) better battery life than the F3 (20-22 hrs vs 17-18 hrs, in normal mode with fancy services turned off). However the 920 isn't much use if you want to use it for navigation do to the way they've implemented the mapping while navigation on the F3 is the best of any watch-based GPS.

The F3 supports charging while in use (but strangely doesn't allow display of the data screens while charging), whereas the 920 can't be charged while in use.

The F3 looks far better than a 920, but is also quite large and may be too big for some smaller female wrists.

I guess it'll depend what your priorities are...

Thanks flanker I think I will go for the 920 as its battery life that's the main priority

In my view the 920xt is a fab peice of kit - suits my needs. GPS/Glonass accuracy is spot on, and gets a fix in no time at all. Battery life is up to around 20hrs. If budget is an issue then an old 310xt could work, and has a similar 20hr battery promise...just doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the more modern Garmin's now have

so does the F3; you'll need to to get the new HRM to get the dynamics info on either of them.
