lol I do a couple of things in the same day. I'm also very dubious about only doing a 2 hour long run, but it works fab for the bloke who's done my training plan (William Sichel and his trainer Shaun Brassfield Thorpe). I wear a vest with only 2% of my bodyweight (but this will slowly increase over time). The plan is to get faster in the 2 hours therefore run further. I'm not expecting miracles at Fleetwood next week as it's early days, but after 7 months of Hadd training I just got slowwwer and slowwwwwwer and slowwwwwwer! ![]() |

William isn't Kenyan or Ethiopian is he by any chance (in which case his 2 hour long run might well be 20 miles+)

Cabbey, I don't mean to be funny, but isn't William Sichel an international ultra distance runner? Are his training methods really suited to mere mortals like us?! Anyway, whatever works for you, of course, but a very brief look at his website and it looks like his stuff is pretty extreme! williamsichel.co.uk :-)G

He is, yes. I want to run an ultra one day... he reckons he can help anyone from a housewife wanting to run their first 5K to an elite wanting a better time. I'm enjoying the training... which I think is the important thing.

Absolutely agree Cabbey - there are so many aspectes to effective training, including psychological and practical considerations of motivation, time, location etc. so it's v. important to find one that "fits". I did my first (and only!) ultra this year - Devil of the Highlands. 43 miles, 6,000ft, very rocky and lots of fun. Managed it in 8.5 hours off the back of 6 months of injury. Didn't manage many long runs in the preceeding 6 months (1 x 24, 1 x 26.2 (VLM), 2 x 15) and very little training generally. But I did it slowly and carefully and had a great time. However, I do think the 2100 miles of long, slow running that I did last year (not Hadd, but similar) helped me to have the "base" to be able to go reasonably long. So is it true to say in your training program that you will *never* do a long run (e.g. > 15 miles or 2.5 hours)? :-)G |

Well my big "dream" is the Comrades one day, but unless I get faster I may as well forget it. That's why I got in touch with William. They assess all of my training (on here actually!) and change things... for instance, I tried a 10mm MP which is now being put down to 10.40 because I was knackered at the end of 6 miles (I know... I'm beyond slow) ![]() I asked if I would eventually run longer than 2 hours.. they said it was unlikely, I will get heavier weight in the vest and be expected to run faster in the 2 hours as time goes by, and they finished saying "Well, we never did say this was an easy option" ![]() |

5K today went fine to plan, treated it as a "Short Tempo" out of the Furman plan 3 miles at 6:45 pace. A smidge quicker than 43 min 10K pace (more like 42) but that's OK! It's still 2 mins behind my 5K time from 2 years ago, but if I can stay injury free, I'll happily race slower, if I can start training a bit more quickly! Furman definitely advises *against* racing too much. Which contrasts a little with P&D and others, who incorporate races into the training schedule. Furman says do a training plan for each race, then don't race within your training plan, if you see what I mean. I think P&D is more realistic here in some ways because we all like to race. The thing is with Furman, because you are training hard, you need to avoid racing at 100% in order to do quality training the following days/weeks. And I don't know about anyone else, but historically I haven't been very good at "taking it easy" in races! Anyway, need to put intervals into the plan somewhere next week. One problem is that I was goign to do tempo on club nights (much easier to run more quickly when there are other, quicker, more talented runners for me to chase than to try and push myself!) but club is a Wed night. Doesn't fit in well with the spin/gym classes I want to do. Hey ho! But a certain super speedy runner in our club is talking about setting up faster road based training on a Thurs night - this could fit in very nicely indeed! Fingers crossed: Mon Spin/other cardio Tue Intervals from 8 x 400 to 3 or 4 x 1600 at varying paces Wed Hard swim or circuits or other cardio Thu Tempo - starting 4 miles, going up to 10 over time Fri Rest (or v. gentle swim or recovery) Sat Long Run Sun easy cardio - gentle swim or gym Keep it up Furman-ites! :-)G |
