Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

@Diogenes I don’t venture that far either but by walking quite short distances and then restarting/starting watch I’ve opened up quite a bit more grid.

I use the FW grid to determine where I’m walking to, to start my main activity so I clear fog or pick up goodies and avoid the nasties.
The dog I walk for a neighbour is also a little confused by the sudden detours up random side roads though enjoying new lamp posts on which to read/leave pee Mail

(It does mean I’ve recorded some ridiculously short activities because every step counts in the virtual challenge and I have to beat the dragon. 🤣)

Yes, but that doesn't work, does it, because as I understand it all activities start from the centre of your grid.

Thanks Monki, most of my points came from 1 very effective run, even though I do try and vary my routes

Always happy to hear suggestions for narratives and objectives.

And if I get roughly the same number of complaints that say there are too many and too few items, that says I've got it about right I reckon.

The density of items is highest closest to home, but tails off. I've got all sorts of stats.

It does work because if you walk to a different place then start an activity this different start point is now the centre of the grid. Start recording your run from here, even running back to your usual start point and following your usual route you will defog new areas as the centre of the grid is in a different place to usual.

On this grid the green spit is showing where I stated to uncover the line going left.

When I reached what is tge end of that cleared line I stopped, saved and then started my garmin again.

This meant that was now the center of the grid.

By retracing the exact route id just done plus a bit more i created the fog free area extending out to the right.

Does that make sense?

This is an extreme example as I went 2 miles out to restart.

But by just walking to the end of my street and then running a 3 mile loop I opened up much more of the circular bit in the middle of my grid.

I've been told precisely the opposite, and that is my experience too. The start of any activity is the centre of the grid. It's not like Hide and Seek, for example, where you can fix your home point to an actual location.

Regarding the idea that mileage is the kingmaker in this game - a week or so ago, I found a strong-ish correlation of 0.8 between mileage and leaderboard position. I've just done the same comparison, and it's dropped to 0.58, as (presumably) the strategic elements have come into play.

Someone may be able to do a better job than me.

Im off to grab good stuff, avoid nasties and to try not to attack any castles just yet

About This Thread

Maintained by fetcheveryone
I have decided to build a new version of Fetchpoint, and for now at least I am calling it Fetchworld.

The original Fetchpoint was first launched in 2011 - and I don't know of anything else that was like it at the time. The closest thing I was aware of at the time was geocaching - but nothing virtual like this. It predated Pokemon Go by five years :-)

As with any code project, what started as a relatively clean chunk of code has taken on various bug fixes, workarounds and the code equi...
