Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

They are money pits aren't they? But so worth it. Tow bar next on ours for bike rack and the can take the bike rack off the back door and have the rear spolier fitted.

It soaks up my pocket money, that's for sure. I'd only spend it on beer, fags and chasing girls otherwise 🙂

I'm looking for advice;

If I want to buy a camper van, should it be a vw? I've looked at Mazda, which seem cheaper, but maybe don't keep their value as well and seem to all be automatics.

And how old is too old? The van, not me.

Thanks.

Just to answer a question you didn't ask :-)

I'm glad that we went with a box van as it's far too useful in that mode to want to have it permanently full of living gear. We have put a bed in the back of it occasionally and very comfortable it is too. Plus, it takes a tandem even with the bed. Not many campers can manage the same.

(the bed is a cheap king-sized wooden frame, cut down the middle and with a few extra legs added to make it telescoping. Foam mattress in two pieces.)

Thanks for the reply, jda, but I'm not sure that I'm up to driving a box van. For my purposes, small is good.

Couple of friends of mine have Mazda Friendee Bongos and they’re happy with them. I think if you buy new you’ll suffer depreciation but the second-hand market seems fairly buoyant. Another friend has a Nissan people-carrier which he bought as an import. It’s very nice and could be converted. Other friends have in the past converted Transits (also overpriced IMO) and Renault panel vans.

VW seem to hold their price and there’s a huge fan-base which seems happy to spend their money.

I think I prefer the VW. Better get saving (and a better job!).

And I like automatics. Got an auto Discovery2 and it’s the business.

From my experience, don't buy an old classic VW camper. They really do look the business but you need to spend a lot of money on keeping them going.
