Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I'm probably not alone in thinking I've reached the time in life where a smaller house is appropriate, so I thought I'd open a spot for thinking aloud.

My first problem is why most of the houses we're looking at are roughly the same size as the one we're leaving.

You probably expanded into your available space so subconsciously seek similar in new location.

I’ve kind of downsized this year in that Mrs TRO owned a 3 bed, I owned a 4 bed and now we own a 3 bed (with 2 bed Annexe).

The surprise is the amount of stuff you accumulate and the discipline to get rid of lots.

We amply filled the house when we moved in but it hasn't remotely emptied itself as the children have moved out.

I think our problem will be finding somewhere that doesn't feel too 'enclosed' - although the large garden is currently my main driver for starting to think about downsizing, all the smaller houses around where we live have gardens which are just too small or too overlooked or both.

I know you're thinking of moving to a completely different part of the country, @ChrisHB Chris, and this is one of our big question marks - when we downsize do we stay in our little bit of Cheltenham or do we move completely down to Sidmouth? There are pluses and minuses to both options.

Anyway I wish you happy and productive house-hunting Chris!

Indeed. Gardens that are manageable feel cramped and very overlooked.

We downsized last year from a 3 bed to a 4 bed house 😆 The current garden is much smaller, which was part of our reason for moving, thankfully not feeling overlooked.

My parents started decluttering last year and made me sort through the stuff I had put into the loft 20+ years ago...

We have this challenge coming up. Though almost any thing is "downsize" compared to 5 bed, 28 acre, 9 stables!

Downsizing options include:
Moving to New Zealand!
Moving to Isle of Lewis
2 bed apartment (horses go on livery which increases costs)

Not easy! :-) G

Going to add this to my watch list to see what other considerations others are coming up with. We have too many choices (which I realise is a bit of a luxury).

Going for planning permission for a new build somewhere on the property (either to move into, so down sizing) or to realise some value but still live in current house?
