And by this I do not mean yes, it works on wifi...
I mean: I am in the middle if scenic nowhere. I have just fallen down a waterfall and in stead of my shoulder, I have fractured my leg so I cannot walk out, I have to call Mountain Rescue.
I was just told, and this person was adamant, that Whatsapp works everywhere?

No, it's not magic. You need data or wifi.

Thanks Fetch, that is what I thought...
I am just going to get one of those beacons, a Spot tracker... That way, you press a button and it goes via satellite and does work almost everywhere in the world...

Did they mean whatsapp?
What3words was designed to work everywhere, i.e. once downloaded, it relies on GPS signal to give you a location, rather than internet access.

No, they meant Whatsapp. I asked about whatthreewords too. I do have that now...
Thing is, when I had this accident last year, I had no signal, my phone flew out of my pocket into the river... So, well, yeah, I am not standard! It was a rare occasion that I did have my phone as I was taking photos. Thing is, I don't carry such things on short walks, which this was... Hence my thinking if getting a Spot and get into the discipline of always carrying it...

if you want them to test out their Whatsapp theory, suggest they put their phone in airplane mode and see if any messages they send arrive, or if they can receive any! Or take out the sim card, turn off wifi and see if it works!

Presumably even without signal it does actually "work", as in you can open the app and read messages you already have and probably even draft messages to send.
It just won't be able to receive or deliver anything until it has either a data or wifi signal, which, in an emergency situation would be "not ideal".

Exactly!
He has gone in a huff. Kept going on about one to one encryption 🙄🙄🙄 which wasn't the point! I don't have and use whatsapp for very different reasons but if it used satelite signals to work "all the time" I'd consider it...
I am not helped by having no signal around here. Or rather: only erratic...

Spot tracker is a relatively expensive annual subscription though.

I know... I have used them... But they do work worldwide, which is when I would most need it. Alrhough: no adventures planned in the near future. And currently, no units available anywhere either...
Back to the drawing board!
