Cycling in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania - anyone with experience to share?

My mate and I are considering cycling in one or more of these countries in 2024, Putin-willing. One where we hire bikes and the journey/hotels are all booked for us by a company who take our bags to each destination. Likely to be May or June, 10-14 days cycling.

Anyone have experience of cycling in (or generally travelling around) these countries? I'd welcome your thoughts and suggestions. Definitely interested in the less touristy areas.

I put out a similar call about 18 months ago before cycling in Albania and had some very helpful Fetchie replies so I'm hoping my luck holds out again.

I have not done it but me and youngest were looking at it a few years ago. Are you thinking of the Baltic Sea trail/Iron Curtain Trail?

There are really good German cycle guidebooks published by Bikeline. I've got the volume from Riga to Lubeck (but it was printed pre-Putin's invasion of Ukraine so assumes you can cycle through Kaliningrad which I really doubt is possible right now.

I really haven't got to that level of detail yet. From what I've seen, the most common supported routes are along the coast, which i assume is the Baltic Sea trail. But I'm really keen to avoid touristy routes, even if 'touristy' in the Baltics is completely different from 'touristy' in Spain, Greece, etc. Though, having said that, i suspect that in reality our route options will be limited to those where there's a supported option.

My old man cycled there a few years ago- Estonia I think, but not sure. The only thing I can recall is that he found it a bit boring, maybe a bit flat. I'll ask him this weekend.

I went to Tallin years ago, very nice city. Did not venture into the countryside. Tallin was getting very busy with tourists mostly from cruise ships. In the most rural and less touristy places English will not be spoken by many Estonians

thanks Llama. Having cycled in the second hilliest country in Europe last year (Albania) I have no issues with flat!

fair point UC. I suspect we'll be going with a tour operator of some kind who'll be giving back up so that will help. But i also have no problem trying to wing it with some kind of universal sign language :-)
