Thats what we do too... One route is 20.7 miles and the other is between 20.8 and 20.9 its close enough to not be bothering with little extra bits. I have made runs up before but some of my loops are over (3.5, 12.4, 10.5) and some are under (6.8, 20.7, 19.89) so I figure it all works out in the wash

I view it more as teh last extra part beinga bonus. So I worked out a route that I knew would be 21 miles, and anything extra is a bonus. The worst thing for me would be arriving home with the garmin showing just under my planned mileage, not because I want a round number but because i want to at least hit the planned mileage. 20+ runs especially.

Just noticed a 66 page guide to the race on email? What on earth can they say beyond 'Don't bother bringing your car and turn up at 10am on the 14th April and run' for 66 pages?

experienced runners: this is my first marathon, I haven't (yet) run more than 15 miles due to a cold/chest infection. I can still feel the chest infection and still don't feel 100% but I have started running again this week. Am I being naive, foolish, underprepared, if I get a 17-18 mile run in on the weekend, and taper after that? Will I survive? I'm pretty confident I'll get to the 20 mile mark ok - how horrible will it be to cover the last 6 if I'm underprepared?

Yes. 18 this weekend, rest and a proper taper. The last 6 will be hard, but you'll survive. Worst thing you could do would be to try to catch up on training you missed and end up knackered on the start line (I speak from experience here). Don't set unrealistic time targets, take it easy and enjoy the atmosphere, then come back and storm the next one. It is meant to be fun

Pretty much everyone is underprepared for the first one! Agree with Johnny (god this is becoming a habit!).

Ultra Kanga Kazzaaaaah!!
If I'm between .85 and .99 when I get to my destination I'll always make up the extra little bit. Below that I don't tend to bother
