I travel to Asia regularly (Vietnam, China, South Asia) and hate treadmills but tend to stick to them. Busy pavements, pollution and the fear of being pestered means its the dreadmill for me. Hope you find somewhere decent to get out ![]() |

Forgot to mention, you have to watch out for the "quack hock puew" (spitting) when running out on the streets. It's major gross! ![]() |

I was in Beijing a few years back and the pollution was horrid you could taste it in the air, I staying inside and use a treadmill, a colleague who did go outside to run went home with a chest infection!

One of my friends is a runner who lived in Beijing and I'd be happy to ask her, but you're not going there, are you?

So, day 1, and run 1 done in Tianjin. The hotel receptionist looked shocked when I asked where I could go for a run (I think she understood I wanted her to film me shagging her poodle). Then she said I may be able to walk in the streets behind the hotel. Er... that's where I had arrived from, and I didn't fancy running on those narrow, badly-paved streets. The wide, pedestrianised, riverfront, that looked as it it stretched for miles either side of the hotel, looked a lot more appealing. Anything wrong with this, I asked? Yes, you'll have to cross the busy road, she answered. Ooookayyy... We do have pedestrian crossings in Europe too, and as it turned out I managed the Chinese variety OK... So 5 miles done on the riverbank in Tianjin, with people looking at me like I was some madman. On the other hand, the 10 people or so who had dug a whole in the ice to be able to plunge into the river didn't appear to be worth any attention from passers-by...
