(I remember speaking to a barman in Keswick who described everywhere south of Keswick as down south).

It's all relative isn't it. Every where North of me is oop North and everywhere South is daan saaf.

Marathon litter.
Halstead Mara today, lovely countryside route so it's especially annoying to see discarded gel wrappers, plastic cups thrown aside a long way after the aid stations and sponges dumped miles from the sponge points.
Kind of understandable at a big city event but inexcusable out in the country lanes.

Yup, no excuse for dropping litter. And everyone says they hate it, so who's dropping all those wrappers? Is there some sort of cognitive disconnect going on?
(Litter ground my gears today too, going up the long climb from Soller to the Monnaber tunnel in Majorca. I was moving slowly, so there was too much time to contemplate the gel packets at the roadside and in the verge. Snipers are required.)

[Very true, is all relative FDNB, can't go much further East without wading out to sea :p]
Poor dishwasher stacking protocol. You can fit twice as much stuff in if you put the right thing in the space.

On a trail race last Sunday I actually picked up gel wrappers dropped by runners ahead of me. It's a lovely course through beautiful countryside and I couldn't bear the idea of litter spoiling it. Thankfully there weren't many - on the Essex 20 if I'd done that I'd have ended up with half my bodyweight in gel wrappers.

Most trail/ultra races I've done have mentioned not dropping litter in the race briefing, but some race organisers are hardly blameless: I've cleaned up "race litter" more than once, a few days after the race has run. Dead glow sticks, cardboard arrows, ribbons flagging the route; it may be tied to gates or trees, rather than lying on the ground, but it's still litter.
And yes, one of the races lecturing me about dropping litter left a whole bunch of it on the course.

The only "trail" Mara I've done was Flitch Way, last NYE. I didn't see a single item of discarded maracrap on the entire course. It led me to wonder whether trail runners are nicer human beings than road runners.

Agree with you, Fitz. Halstead is a lovely countryside marathon and should be treated as such. Didn't do it this year but will be back soon.
Interesting watching the Brighton and London Marathon highlights, how elite athletes drop their water bottles so the runners immediately behind have something to dodge. Whereas, everyone else is instructed to throw theirs to the side of the road.
