I think that leaving a big a gap is a symptom of stopping as soon as possible so they can check for text messages.

It was Police driving course instruction to always pull up a car's length behind the vehicle in front. (Pissing about checking facetube instead of setting off wasn't by the way)

But then the creeping forward negates this! I think it's dangerous personally, because most people don't leave a massive gap, you're expecting them to continue driving and then when they stop early it's unexpected. Fair enough to leave space for rolling backwards a bit etc, but generally it seems like plain bad driving to me, especially the creeping.

Leave enough room to read the car reg plate infront was the instruction from my driving instructor and I think that's smart.

I was taught to leave T&T - enough room to see the car in front's tyres and a bit of tarmac. That would give you room to move round them if there was an issue. I don't reckon that would account for a car length. Unless like some of the yoof around Clitheroe you have your seat so far reclined you can only see sky through the windscreen.

I think if you can see the tits and teeth of the driver in front something has gone badly wrong

Creeping at traffic lights...meh.
Creeping at give ways etc...behaviour of bilious retards. It gains them nothing....they can't move until you are gone. Yet they love to inch forward (impatiently) and it always causes you moment of doubt...have they seen you...are they going to go...better cover my brakes.
Especially annoying when you are on a bike and you know there is a decent chance they haven't seen you, as we've all had that, and you know you are likely to die if they do go.
I really really hate it.
