If cars pass the overhead red X on a closed lane, surely that is an offence that could handily be caught by the speed cameras mounted in the same gantry.

I've seen someone get pulled over on the M25 for doing exactly that, Chris. We all cheered Surely if people move over at some stage during the 800 metres where there's a suitable gap, then both lanes slow down a little bit instead of what currently happens: the left hand lane screeches to a halt at the merging point, causing a tailback on the left, so then people pull out into the right hand lane even though they know it's closing and hurtle along until they reach the merging point, whereupon some mug who's been sitting in a queue for 5 minutes then lets them in. I don't think the Highway Code takes account of common courtesy and people not driving like selfish arseholes...

Which is why if *everyone* behaved like zippers and used all available lanes, there would be less of a tailback as everyone would be travelling equally and merging together. It's the same merge activity, just whether it's at the start of the signs or the start of the closure.

I would soonest have everyone who tries to jump the queue get put in a compound until the road works are completed.

That'll slow them down HB. Good idea.

Yup Duchess. Zippers. It's not fcuking difficult FFS.
Mind you, since traffic behaves like fluid flow, I'd ban anyone from driving who didn't have a degree in physics, maths or engineering as only they'd be able to understand it properly. That would speed things up.

I'm with Chris The current behaviour rewards those who behave selfishly, which offends most people's sense of fairness. And it slows down everyone but less so the people who deliberately pull out into a lane which is going to close. Actually, motorways are usually less bad for this, because they use speed restrictions to slow down all the lanes before merging so there's less advantage in staying in the closing lane, whereas on a 70mph dual carriageway it seems like a rational decision to sail past the queues and then be politely let into the open lane. It's just wankerish behaviour.

It would be easier if there was an accepted protocol on when the merge point should be - whether that is early or late (probably optimal). Those who merge early cause just as much aggro to the traffic flow as those who go right up to the end. If everyone did the same then the zipper would work perfectly.
Simple.

Stupid commentators.
England have taken 4 wickets, dropped 2 catches and got a wicket off a no ball. "We could have had them 7 down."
No you couldn't the bloke you dropped then got out later on. Ok two of the guys out there have had reprieves, but you can only get a guy out once.
