Presumably because they don't like the rough stones under their delicate feet. Look, the path is currently a 6 foot wide scar across the fell side, would you prefer it to be an 8 foot scar? And they sit next to each other all day every day and can't manage to discuss which day one needs to go early and avoid the day the other is going early. FFS.

A colleague of mine (who's other half is Brazilian) said that the demo was primarily about a number of poor people's homes that were demolished along that stretch to accommodate the TV studios. The crowd were more or less stating, 'that's where my home was.' Adrian Chiles went out to see the crowd (from a distance) and called, 'it's not our fault, is it!' Enough said!
