Dvorak
[Depeche Mode - you can't do that now. Although I am reimagining it as "Reach out and touch me, I'm sick.] People appearing on quiz shows who appear to know absolutely fuck all, and furthermore are completely unabashed by that. (I believe this may have come up before.) Also, the number of such who are young people in higher education, often teacher training. Absolute waste of money and, given the ongoing inequalities in access to higher education, depriving others of a place they could make a lot more use of. Whilst I am at it, the businessfication on tertiary/ quaternary education. That took more of a political slant than I'd originally meant. |

[I’m pretty sure I’ve said that one before, Dvorak. I guess the tv companies don’t want too many people who are capable of winning money going on.]

[Random and shuffle play (at least on Spotify) aren’t truly random since this results in too many apparent coincidences, with the same song/artist/genre coming up twice in close succession. People’s idea of what random play *should* sound like doesn’t coincide with how it actually does sound, so the algorithms are biased to space out similar tracks and make it sound “more” random to the listener].

SR, I'd heard that but was never really sure if it was true or not

[It’s certainly true on Spotify, GG. There’s a brief article about it from a former Spotify coder here: quora.com I don’t know about iPod or other platforms/devices, but I’d imagine it’s quite likely they do the same. |

[While it might not play all the tracks in random order my iPod plays the entire list before doing any repeats while in shuffle mode so you won't hear the same track twice unless you have two copies. But I'm probably grinding other people's gears now so I'll stop going on about it ![]() |

[I'm still chuckling that a 32 year old song is considered modern by some here ![]() +1 to Dvorak. A relative of my idiot brother-in-law appeared on the Chase once, got 1 or 2 questions right, before guessing all her multiple guess questions wrong. And was proud. I cringed. A stark contrast to a former colleague who won an episode of Tipping Point, and managed to not swing for the presenter who mocked his mannerisms (and he bought us cakes with some of his winnings!) |

[Dvorak - and others - Half Man Half Biscuit wrote a song about that very subject on their last album called ‘Knobheads on Quiz Shows’, the lyrics to which make me chuckle]

[Part of the dynamic of The Chase is lesser contestants piggy backing off the more able - the opportunity to judge someone when they go low having told everyone else to go high]
