The point of there not being any space on the other side of the cashier is because you're supposed to put it all quickly in your trolley, and then pack at the packing shelf, meaning the queue moves at a reasonable pace.

Why they can't just get in and drive off once they've paid is beyond me.

I just get my bags and card ready whilst in the queue, which anybody can do. No need to start looking for your purse after the cashier has totalled up and told you the amount.
